Starting Strong: Basics for Brain Building

My students need the basic school supplies their families struggle to afford, such as binders, notebooks, markers, and pencils.

My Students

Back-to-school shopping was an experience I always took for granted until I began teaching. The majority of my students live in poverty and have not yet experienced the beginning of a school year with the necessary materials in hand. This year will be different!

When I need inspiration, I don't pop in a movie or push play on a song- I look at the students I am fortunate enough to be able to teach.

My students are all in special education and attend middle school in one of the more turbulent parts of Washington, DC. Despite the enormity of the challenges they face daily, they continue to show up to school with eager smiles and a genuine desire to achieve their goals. My students struggle significantly with school, both academically and behaviorally, and the majority of them require a lot more structure and support than the typical middle school student. Over the four years I have worked with these students, however, I have seen growth I would never have imagined upon meeting them.

My Project

Growing up, I never gave a second thought to the pencil in my hand, notebook on my desk, and binder in my backpack. These were all purchased for me before I started the school year and I considered them mere necessities. As a teacher in an impoverished area of DC, however, I have quickly learned to view these basics as luxuries. The beginning of each school year always brings phone calls from parents of my students, worried that they are not able to afford the notebooks, binders, pencils, and other supplies their child needs. We stretch out the materials we do have to as many students as possible and often purchase more out of our own pocket, but I would love for my students to be able to begin the year with ownership over their own belongings. The basic classroom materials provided with your help will eliminate a major source of stress in the lives of my students and will allow them to begin their school year with structure and support.

Last year I asked my students what resources we should include on our next DonorsChoose project.

I was expecting them to dream big, imagining iPads and interactive games. Instead, many of my students shouted "pencils!", "binders!" and "a huge box of markers!" with the same excitement I had anticipated for the big-ticket items. My students know what they need in order to be successful in school, and I am proud of them for acknowledging that we must meet the basic needs first.
