My Project
This upcoming school year marks my first year with my very own classroom, and I could not be more excited. My DonorsChoose project includes simple yet essential classroom items I have seen used time and again by experienced teachers, things I know will make a big impact.
I will be teaching at an elementary school in the heart of Pleasant Grove, a Title I school where nearly every student qualifies for free lunch.
The needs here are great, and the poverty is impossible to ignore. I spent my residency at this school last year and heard discouraging comments warning me about the area, the students’ behavior, and their academic struggles. But I did not listen. I grew up in a similar neighborhood and came in with an open heart. What I found were incredible kids who needed support, love, and consistency.
My goal is to give every student an equal chance to succeed without the stress of lacking supplies. On the first day last year, only three out of forty students brought even part of their supply list. Many needed uniforms, backpacks, and basic necessities. My project includes dry erase boards, markers, and erasers to help students prepare for the new screen to scratch format of the STAAR test. It also includes a laminator to preserve important visuals and reusable materials to save paper and resources. I have also added pencils, folders, organizers, and other tools to create a well-structured and welcoming classroom.
As a single mom of a toddler and nine months pregnant, I am unable to work this summer to purchase these supplies. Your support will help me provide a strong, loving start for my students who show incredible strength and perseverance every day.
