This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you walk into my classroom you will find an eager group of sixth grade students who are excited to immerse themselves into scientific investigations. Each day 4 sections (approximately 30 students in each) of these energetic students enter my classroom with a thirst to ask questions, make hypotheses, and test their conclusions in order to learn to think like a scientist. These students come from a low socioeconomic and highly immigrant community. Due to their situation they have often spent most of their elementary years focused on reading and math, and enter my sixth grade science class with little experience in scientific experimentation.
My Project
Each year my students walk in the door to my classroom with very little in the way of supplies. As a scientist they need the best tools to document their new knowledge and findings in investigations. The best tool for this is a Quad Ruled (Graphing) Composition Notebook. I emphasis to my students that this notebook will contain their intellectual property (notes, diagrams, ideas and "Ah-ha Thoughts").
Throughout the year my students will be able to document their findings and re-access any of their prior knowledge from this notebook.
I use this notebook as an organization tool in which we keep all of our learning from August to May.
By keeping this notebook my students learn how to organize and review their data and gain ownership in their own learning. When necessary we use the Elmer's glue to attach any items (maps, foldables, articles, etc.) that enhance our learning.
