Help me give my students a compost bin to make connection on how the things they eat eventually are cycled and can become compost for the plants that they will be growing.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a school that caters to new arrivals. All my students are learning English and many have interrupted education. Our goal is to have a our students speaking, writing and reading in English by the time they graduate. My students love to dance and sing and have put on wonderful plays for the last few years in our school.

This year for the first time ever we are offering Horticulture.

My students are pretty excited about it and so am I. Having hands on projects and activities allows them to become motivated in learning. we are changing the our perimeter of our field into a garden. At the current moment it is just over grown with weeds. Since it is our first time offering this course we are starting from the bottom up. We want this garden to be their gift to future students, the community and the entire building. Currently our school houses 3 other high schools.

My Project

We are starting a school garden and would like to connect this current unit on invasives with the following unit on soil and its effect on the plats that can grow there. Having a compost area will help us see the cycle of nutrients in an ecosystem and how those nutrients are returned to the plants that use them. Having a compost bin will help my students see stages, where things that would normally be garbage can be used to help feed their plants.

We are very much are in need of gardening gloves.

My students and I have been working without any and have not been able to handle the tougher weeds because we do not have gloves.
