This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach the moderate to severe population at a middle school. From the moment my assistant and I walk through the door, we are working with our students to not only teach them academics but social skills as well.

Even though my students are in middle school, they are socially and academically functioning far below their grade-level.

It is my job to help them gain some social and academic independence, but this can only take place with adequate supplies. We need not only pencils and paper but also nontraditional supplies like theta-bands. Once my students have completed an assignment, they require sensory breaks to help them refocus for the next task. If they do not have sensory items, they begin to get very fidgety. Due to their lack of language abilities, this will have a negative effect on the rest of the academic performance for the remainder of the day.

My Project

I have requested moving-sits and thera bands because these are some of the basic materials that are required in my classroom. These things are just as essential as the paper and pencils which I have also requested. I have requested some of the daily, more common materials such as paper, crayons, pencils and pencil sharpeners. Some of the things that I have requested will aid my students with their behavior and are sometimes even more essential than the paper and pencil basics. Once my students have completed an assigned task, they always ask for a sensory break. This is essential to their academic performance because, without it, they are unable to fully focus on the next academic task.

This gracious donation will help my students stay focused and calm and retain the academics taught.

Without these essential materials, my students will be unable to stay focused for long periods of time. It makes me so happy to see my students make growth, but it also excites me to see the social growth. The items I have asked for will help my students make great strides in all areas of academics.
