Starting From the Ground Up: A Self Contained Learning Center!
Help me give my students a place to learn! All of this will be used to create task boxes, allow for students to have engaging but educational games and for that students can bounce around as a reward!
My students are my heart. They are the reason I get up in the morning. They consistently make me laugh and surprise me with their spirit and joy. I feel extremely lucky to teach these children, but they present challenges for me as well. Ranging from grades K-8, each student comes with a unique personality and set of challenges to match.
Each of my students thrive in different environments, need unique daily schedules and have specific goals that must be met.
Learning centers and workstations must be created. Safe and quiet spaces must be available. Creativity should be inspired. We want not only to provide educational services, but also social-emotional learning and life skills education will be a focus.
My Project
At GPS there has never been a self-contained special education classroom. Therefore, we are starting from scratch. The classroom will not be a typical general education classroom and will cater to the special learning needs of our atypical students. The space will be geared toward the sensory and physical limitations of our students based on the needs and comfort requirements. We will focus not only on curriculum, but on day to day life skills necessary to succeed outside our school walls. Not only that, the students will have access to sensory toys and hands-on activities that encourage learning in their free-time.
My goal is to create a self-contained classroom where students have access to the necessary resources and tools that encourage a happy and safe learning space; space where students will have the freedom to progress at their own pace in an enjoyable yet productive environment.
Our mission is to create a successful program that will last years on our campus. It will be a place where our students can thrive; it will give them opportunities to experience learning in a way that wasn´t previously available on our campus. We are ambitious in our pursuits but feel our students deserve access to the best education available to them.
