Early childhood is a critical time in every child’s development where a simple playtime activity can affect everything from social skills to motor skills! My class consists of 17 inspirational, energetic, highly motivated three- and four-year-olds who come from all different backgrounds. We spend time learning to appreciate our similarities and differences while supporting each other through play. Each day together is a new chance to learn and grow!
I teach in a Head Start center giving children, who otherwise may not have access to preschool, a chance to achieve these school-readiness skills.
My students enter my classroom everyday excited to learn. They have a curiosity about the world around them and spend their time asking questions and exploring their ideas! Each day is a new experience!
My Project
Everyone has been affected by the recent pandemic. However our country’s children have struggled the most, perhaps without us realizing it. As we venture into a new year of learning, we are making up for lost time and it’s the social-emotional skills that will take the longest to recover.
Social-emotional skills are how we communicate our feelings, resolve social conflicts, and develop empathy for others.
This begins by simply recognizing feelings on flashcards then on other people.
Despite beginning the school year remote, with the materials I’ve requested, I will be able to encourage emotional learning and help children talk about their feelings. The flashcard sets will allow each child to have their own so we can use them during virtual classes. Children can then work on identifying the correct emotion within their own cards. The journals will allow children and parents to write about the emotions we are discussing together at home. The books offer different perspectives on emotions including a copy for each child of one of my favorite stories. And finally, the dolls are a great resource for social stories on virtual classes as well as interacting with when we return to the classroom.
These next few months are critical to getting children back to their baseline before their routines were interrupted and lives turned upside down. This has been hard enough on adults, yet alone our children who are still learning how to express themselves.
