Starting From Scratch: Building a Home for 5th Grade Learners

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This fall, I’ll be opening the doors to a brand-new 5th grade classroom—and we’re starting from scratch. My goal is to create an engaging, comfortable, and organized environment where every student can feel at home and ready to learn.

To foster a warm and inviting classroom community, I’ve selected a large, colorful area rug where we can gather for class discussions, morning meetings, and group learning.

This space will become the heart of our classroom.

For organization and daily routines, I’ve included a 30-slot mailbox system so that students can manage their work and responsibilities independently. A 15-drawer rolling cart and 9-drawer desktop organizer will help keep learning materials and supplies neatly stored and easily accessible.

Comfortable seating options matter too—especially for wiggly or sensory-seeking learners, so I’ve included a set of flexible seating yoga ball chairs.

Books are central to any strong classroom. This project includes a variety of high-interest texts:

-A set of Who Was/Is biographies to support nonfiction reading skills

-A National Geographic readers collection for curious minds

-The Crossover trilogy to inspire upper elementary readers

-A Goosebumps series box set to engage reluctant or enthusiastic readers

To motivate students and build positive classroom culture, I’ve also included over 1,000 small sensory toy party favors to use as prizes, fidgets, and treasure box items. These will help reinforce routines and celebrate hard work.

Finally, to support daily academic and creative work, this project includes classroom essentials like Crayola broad line markers, Crayola colored pencils, and a set of 100 safety scissors with comfort grips—tools every 5th grader needs to do their best.
