Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic preschoolers who attend a Title I school. All my students are fun and loving who have mild to severe disabilities including Autism and speech delays. They are a bundle of joy and they come to school every day ready to listen and learn. The more I can make their learning engaging, the more successful they will be.

“Every child is an artist.

The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” -Pablo Picasso. My students love being creative. They love using bright, colorful paper and colorful material to create one-of-a-kind creations. They are curious and loving and live in a neighborhood that has a high crime rate, few parks and little color. School for some of my students is the place where they can happily run, play and learn. I strive each and every day to give them the best early education possible.

My Project

I have selected an array of art materials that will encompass an entire year's worth of activities. Our classroom is full of art: finger painting, collages, coloring, alphabet books, self-portraits, etc. It is no different in my special education preschool classroom. My preschoolers may have autism, but they still enjoy expressing themselves with colors, textures, and other sensory activities. It is their creativity using different mediums that allows them to express their individuality.

Each month we begin a new developmental study that inspires our daily activities.

One month we learn about pets. We learned that some pets are found in our homes, on a farm and in the city. We paint pets, create pets using play doh and collage materials. We will make birds using feathers and place worms in their beaks. Preschool is such a fun grade to teach and my students love to get messy and express themselves through art. The following months we study clothes, trees, buildings, boxes and other fun creative studies that inspire preschoolers. During each study we use art to enhance student learning.

These art materials include bright paper, peel and stick decorations, ink pads, play doh, tissue paper, finger paint, and glue. These art supplies will inspire my little preschoolers with autism the entire school year and allow them to express their individuality and emotions through a variety of mediums. This self-expression is what will make each art project unique and personal to my students while they are getting artsy.
