My Students
Most of my students' families are faced with economic challenges. Most of them will probably never get a chance to see or play a clarinet or a flute. I would love to give my students the chance to learn, and love these real musical instruments. It's just the challenge, and escape that they need.
My students reside in a community in New York City that is quite neglected, politically, and socially.
We share a building with a new school that gets all of the money our school should have received in the past few years. It's hard seeing my students' faces when they notice all of the changes happening in the new school - smart boards in every room, carnivals in the gymnasium, presents around Christmas time, etc. - and it breaks my heart. The one thing the new school doesn't have, that we have, is a music teacher. New, real instruments would boost my students' pride, my schools morale, and give my students a chance to succeed in the face of all of these challenges. My students need two flutes and two clarinets to start a brand new wind ensemble in our school.
My Project
My students would get to learn how to play in an instrumental musical ensemble. My students would learn how to care for a musical instrument. My students would get a chance to learn about different composers, genres, and pieces of music with a first hand experience.
In my students' community, funding runs thin, and most of the schools in the area that they might attend in middle school, might not have an instrumental music program.
If they are given this opportunity to learn an instrument early on, they might be able to fortify their middle school applications and get into a school that provides them with adequate musical support, as well as be in a school that has a wonderful atmosphere, as most schools with thriving music programs do.
