My Students
I have started a new job at a new school. This year I will be serving 137 urban students. The new students that I teach are eager to learn but have horrible organizational and study skills. They are in desperate need of learning these skills in order to become successful high school students.
I work for a NYC public school that serves a south Brooklyn community.
Many, if not all, of the student come from homes that are well below the poverty standard.
Although most of the student body at the school is African American, there is a small population of Caribbean English language learners.
School supplies at my school is in short supply.
At the beginning of the school year, I was given 1 case of copy paper that is to last the school year. This case is supposed to accommodate my needs for all my exams, quizzes, science labs and homework.
At my previous school, I made notepack and graphic organizers which helped students organize their thought and school work. This technique helped be one of the highest preforming teachers at the school.
I am now at a low performing school and I want to bring this technique to my new students to help them achieve success and bring my new school's pass rate to a respectable number.
My Project
Next to books, paper is the life and blood of schools.
Being a high school science teacher (Biology and Earth Science), my curriculum uses a lot of paper. I use paper for:
*guided notes - to help students organize their notebook.
*graphic organizes - to help students organize their thoughts.
*scientific articles - to help improve students reading abilities.
*journals - To help students reflect on what they have just learned.
*homework - to help students practice what they just learn.
*and of course test and quizzes - to help assess student knowledge.
Students of large urban school tend to struggle with many basic academic skills, such as, reading, note taking, organization and studying.
I was faced with similar students at my former school and used specific techniques (involving lots of paper) which turned lots of students into college ready individuals.
With your help, I am hoping to change these low performing science students into high performing individuals.
