Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kim, Ashley, and Gabby have been taking art for 2 years and really like drawing and making art. They are always coming up with ideas on their own and talking and laughing about what their ideas are when they talk about them to each other. Their drawings are not yet self-conscious. They make them for themselves only.
Their school uniforms don't have color but their drawings are very colorful & happy. They are 13 and 14 years old, good students and quiet leaders who other students look up to as "talented art students."
Running an art gallery and having an art show is - early on - introducing students to what can be done with the art they create. Running an art gallery is team work, choosing art work and deciding what should be displayed, how it should be displayed is developing aesthetic judgement and part of the National Art Standards. To get ready for an art show will develop the students' art, their determination to finish their art with a deadline, as well as writing an artist statement to go with their work.
The problem and challenge of running an art program is getting the word out to the rest of the school and community that art is important and a big part of a student's education. Having a place to display students work that is interesting and unique will help spread the word that the art program is alive and thriving at this school.
In Their Own Words
We decided for next year we wanted to have a place to show our work to our friends and teachers because art is an important part of what we do at school. It's important to me. We can have different art in the cafeteria each month. We make art and then take it home. This way before we take it home, we can have a student art show of our and other art students' art. We don't usually see other students' art work. The frames are clear frames and will make the art look good.
We will help put up and take down the art work in the new "art gallery" along with the National Junior Art Honor society at our school. We will tell our friends about the new student art gallery in the multi purpose room. With our teacher we will make labels for the new art work each month and help the students whose artwork is displayed to write an artist statement. We can think up themes for art shows. 7th and 6th graders can see what we do and help with the art gallery when they are 8th graders.
At our school there is no place for all the school to see our artwork. The point of having an art gallery in the cafeteria-multi purpose room is everyone is there every day and events are held there sometimes at night. This art gallery will make the multi purpose room a good place to bring student art work out to the school as well as provide interesting art to look at and enjoy. Art created privately will be publicly displayed and student artists will get feedback from their friends and teachers.
