My Students
My school is located in a high-need community in New York City. All of the students are diagnosed as autistic. The children in the class are significant low functioning. Most of them are limited in their speech and language skills. Some of them are also English language learners. In addition, their frustration tolerance is low. When the students get anxious and/or frustrated, they often exhibit aggressive behaviors such as biting, banging on the table, scratching, hitting, pushing, etc., to get out their feelings. Therefore, the students require the color coding system and visual pictures in their learning environment to help them to organize a sequence of events, manage their behavior and communicate with other people as well as enhancing their ability to understand, anticipate and participate in class activities.
My Project
With the color printer, I could create a color-coded base learning environment for my students with autism in the classroom. A color coding to the traditional picture plays a major role in providing visual cues and multi-sensory to the students with autism and aiding them in their learning. Moreover, it also could help the students with autism to organize or categorize the information into useful pattern which enables the learners to interpret and adjust to the environment.
For example, a color-coded visual schedules would help the students to have a smooth transition, make sure the students gets their work done and the expectations are crystal clear for each student.
A color-coded picture exchange communication system also would facilitate the students with autism who often have difficulty in communication skills to express their needs. I also would assign a color-coded spot to each students in the classroom in order to help them to sit down in their own desk and line up during the activity transition. In addition, a colored, sad face icon also would help the students with autism to manage their own behavior and help them to participate and engage in the class activities throughout the school day. In term of teaching phonics, I would use red color for the first letter in a word in order to help the students to sound it out the word.
However, the color pictures may not long lasting for a whole school year. The student often rips the pictures. Therefore, lamination increases the durability of print materials, allowing the materials to withstand frequent use by students.
In conclusion, a color printer, cartridges, laminator and laminating pouches definitely would provide a tremendous change and help the students with autism in their learning in a new school year.
