Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
100% of my students are English Language Learners and almost all of them live in poverty. They are highly motivated to learn and some of the happiest kids I have ever met. However, they arrive at our school with limited knowledge of even basic letter recognition and need as much help as possible.
My students are among some of the most fascinating I have ever worked with.
They are 100% ESL (they comprise 65% of the school population) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and always want to learn something new! My students attend a public school in New Jersey. The school is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life. Financial struggles are common in most of their households and the purchase of books for personal reasons simply does not exist for most of my students. If I can provide for them by building an extensive library of high interest books and lots of materials for their own creations, then I believe I can begin to help them become star students.
My Project
As English Language Learners, my students need access to as many varied and interesting materials as possible. Every item in this project will fulfill one or more of these needs: engaging materials for literacy centers, markers for individual creation (especially for those who do not speak any English at all yet), folders for the organization of their materials (we currently have over 200 ESL students). A variety of literacy center materials such as literacy stations, sight word books and sight word poems, will help me better target my students' particular needs through materials that are engaging and also high interest.
Our school is categorized as a Priority School by the state department of education.
Our students are struggling in so many ways, so the more I can offer them, the more I truly believe they will succeed in school and life.
