Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten is often the first experience in school for my students. They are precocious, curious and creative. Many of them have already been labeled "at-risk" because of the obstacles they have faced in their past. Our school is located in an area of low economic development, and my students just don't have the same access to resources that many other students do.
We want our students to develop many passions in school.
We want to teach the whole child. Our students need to have multiple experiences each day to apply their creativity in different ways. They are learning to be readers, mathematicians and artists. You may help inspire them with skills that will help them throughout their academic career!
My Project
Art is not a focus in our classrooms anymore. Reading, math, science-these subjects are tested so they have become the major part of our lesson plans. But art is so important! Students who are learning English as a 2nd language or who have issues with speech-they thrive by expressing themselves through art. I think it's important to give our students various ways to show what they are learning and this way is so much fun!
We are laying a foundation for creativity skills in Kindergarten.
Our students learn how to be creative, how to invent in my class. We learn about the artists of the past like Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Basquiat. We read stories and do research about these artists then we make projects in their styles.
The paint and paintbrushes will be used to make self-portraits, backdrops for plays and their version of Starry, Starry Night. We will use the tissue paper for creating characters and spring flowers. The paper will come in handy throughout the year for illustrations of writing assignments.
My students are growing up in an area of low economic development. They cannot afford to bring supplies like construction paper, but we need it for our daily activities. Your donation could really help us invest in the artists of tomorrow!
