My project needs prisms and 3-d glasses.

Starlight, starbright what is it I see in the star light, tonight? My students come from mostly inner-city areas where they do not see the night sky. What they see are only the very few, very bright stars through the light pollution. They do not understand the stars are each giving off a specific light signature and that signature is used to identify the composition of the star.

My school is mostly free and reduced lunch. We do not have supplies for many hands on, investigative labs. During this past semester, the students were interested in how stars can be identified just by looking at the light. The small demonstration we did with the one prism interested them, but a lab where everyone has the opportunity to learn about light and identify mystery gas lights would mean more.

We only have one small prism bought at a toy shop. We could use a class set of prisms for small group work and the 3-d glasses to use on various lights around school, students will learn by trial and error to identify the gases present in light sources. Our school received several LED, halogen, and other type flashlights that can be used by the lab activity. We just need a way to split the light and investigate. As students split various types of light with prisms, and view light split with 3-d glasses, we are asking them to sketch the color bands with colored pencils, markers and/or crayons. The rainbows produced will identify the specific elements present in the light source. An extension on this project is to combine the graphs of various lights to produce a natural visual art otherwise not able to be seen.

Your donation will help my students learn about spectral analysis through a hands on, cooperative and collaborative activity. The next step will be to learn how the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram was generated by this process. We already have developed an investigative lab activity for the H-R diagram. This will tie them together.
