Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are part of a nationally recognized science zoological magnet program. We teach our students to become caretakers of nature and the environment, especially that of our Florida’s natural habitat.
It is through participation in the Zoology Magnet Program and our comprehensive science classes that the acquisition and application of advanced scientific and mathematical concepts, along with research experimentation and the use of technology, that such empowerment will occur.
Our students have had the unique opportunity to witness the evacuation process for hurricane preparation of the zoo animals and see the aftermath of wind damage of an animal's natural environment.
Our school's cultural landscape is 47% Hispanic, 46% African-American, and 7% White with over 95% eligible for free and/or reduced price lunch. We are a Title I designated school that sits in the lush landscape just east of the Florida Everglades.
My Project
Starfish and urchins and squids, oh my! Protecting our learners in research project is driven by curiosity in the middle school science laboratory. Our students need lab aprons to help protect their skin and clothing during their quest of scientific exploration. Learners spend time observing and analyzing a variety of marine and land animals. Field trips not only take place at the zoo, but on Florida's coast. It is there that marine science comes to life and our students take to the water to collect sea urchins or starfish or maybe get a kiss from a dolphin!
“EEEWWWWW!
Cool! Wow!”, are the reactions from the teen zoologist. During the lab process, groups are eager to begin dissecting. Heads are positioned closely together to study the structure and muscles mass of any unusual fish. With googles on, their eyes are protected from a sudden burst of an unknown liquid.
Our comprehensive science classes use the acquisition and application of advanced scientific and mathematical concepts, along with research experimentation and the use of technology. These students are also enrolled in honors level mathematics and language arts classes. Most are earning high school credit while in middle school.
