Starbucks Setting: Alternative Seating in the Classroom
My students need alternative seating: risers for standing desks, yoga balls as chairs, resistance bands for fidgeters, and a lounge area. This will help them stay comfortable and alert during our 75 minute periods.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Pafford's classroom raised $593

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
ACTvF is a small Title 1 high school in Long Island City. We are an un-screened school that admits a broad range of diverse students from all five of NYC's great boroughs. Due to the students' hard work and the dedication that the teachers and administration show every day, our graduation, college attendance and college readiness rates far exceed the citywide average.
Our hardworking students strive to succeed in the Big Apple.
The vibe throughout ACTvF is relaxed, friendly and close-knit. Students and administrators are on a first-name basis, and we pay close attention to students' needs. Working with these kids is one of the greatest joys in my life!
My Project
In 2015 Edsurge contributor Kayla Delzer wrote about the benefits of setting up your classroom like Starbucks sets up their coffee shops. People gravitate towards seating that helps them settle in and get to work.
Students do their best work when they are comfortable; alternative seating allows students to have a seating option that works best for them.
I would like my students to have the option to sit in a standard chair or use a Fit Pro Ball with Stability Legs, fidget in their seat without interrupting others by touching Velcro Fastening Tape under their desk or bouncing their feet against the NeeBooFit Resistance Bands. They can relax in study or discussion groups in a lounge like area with the Intex Beanless Bag Inflatable chairs, or stand at a desk on Greenco Super Strong Stability Leg risers. For my more active students they can quietly peddle the Stamina InStride Folding Cycle all while staying comfortable, alert, and ready to learn.
