My Students

Abraham Lincoln said,"The things I want to know are in books. My best friend is the man who'll get me a book I haven't read." The students are in need of a best friend who will give them the lifelong gift of reading. Students need the opportunity to learn that reading can truly take you places!

The students are in a second grade inclusion classroom.

They have the opportunity to work with both a general education teacher and a special education teacher. There are 25 students in the classroom. Six of the students are identified as having a learning disability that includes reading, but there are several other students who are struggling readers.

My Project

Our school promotes reading in many ways and our Accelerated Reading program is very important to us. Students read books, take online comprehension tests, and earn prizes. Every second grader is expected to read at least two books every week. Students in our class earn star stickers if they meet their weekly goal. The books that we would receive would allow students to meet their weekly goal, as well as increase their reading ability, confidence, and self esteem. The books will be the beginning of a life filled with the love for seeking knowledge through reading. They will be filled with joy when their name is announced by the Principal for making their goal.

Were you a struggling reader?

Do you know a child who is a struggling reader? I do. I currently have six students who feel like they will never learn how to read. They watch the other students every day choose books from bins that they dream of being able to read. I know that they can get there with the right attitude and a lot of reading practice. The high interest books will allow the students to get the needed practice that will lead them to be successful readers.
