Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work at a highly diverse inner-city middle school and my shining stars need extra resources to help them achieve success in the two critical areas I teach: math and science. For many of my students, this is their first year that science is a full year-course and not just a supplemental class (like gym or art), and I want to ensure that it is an exciting, rewarding, and challenging experience.

In my sixth grade science classroom where we study visual-heavy topics such as astronomy and earth science, it is cruel to have my students endure my poor artwork on the whiteboard day after day. They should not have to learn about various landforms and the universe from lengthy definitions and poorly drawn sketches when a PowerPoint presentation or video from United Streaming would present the information in a way that is much clearer.

A LCD projector would be advantageous to my students because they would finally understand what I was talking about - many of my students are visual learners and need to see how erosion works in the real world, they need to see videos or demonstrations about the solar system. Students cannot just learn through straight lecture or taking notes, especially not when it comes to science. Furthermore, the LCD projector could also bring manipulative-based learning to math. Sixth grade is a critical year for math - students are just being introduced to the basics of algebra and are at the same time expected to really master fractions, decimals, and percentages. These topics can be better understood through activities found online (at the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives, for instance), especially when my classroom is not fully-stocked for all 29 students to have their own individual Algeblocks or fraction strips.

With your support, my students will have a chance to get a better education. They will have a chance to truly master the curriculum and start believing that they can perform well in two crucial areas - math and science.
