This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Give the gift of reading! Can you remember a time when you would open up a book and say to yourself "Oh I know this word, and this word." My students need to have the opportunity to hold the books that are read aloud, in their own tiny hands.

My students are kindergarten students, and live in a high poverty area.

Most of my students are English language learners, special needs students, or are academically at risk. Like most children they are curious and full of questions. All of the my students have one common goal, to learn how to read.

My Project

My school is a Teachers College school. This literacy program requires teachers to use authentic literature. Teachers read aloud books like Caps for Sale, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, etc. to provide students opportunity to develop comprehension and begin to identify site words. Providing students with copies of these books will give them the opportunity to practice story telling and identifying sight words with a reading buddy and independently.

The fulfillment of this proposal will not only provide crucial resources for my current students, but to future students.

Kindergarten is a time where teachers need to instill a love for reading and create a learning experience that will begin the process of life long learning.
