Help me give my students books that feature Persons of Color. My role as an educator is to enlighten and teach and these books will feature all races within my classroom.
As we worked to transition our in person teaching to a virtual classroom, my students have shown such strength. They have been able to change how they learn and meet with me daily through Zoom calls to continue their learning.
Changing the way I teach and the way I interact with my students and peers has been no easy task.
We have worked tremendously to continue learning and growth, even during this difficult time.
My Project
Unfortunately, in the children's literature world, it is difficult to find books with characters of color. In 2012, only 6% of children's books featured diverse characters. We live in such a diverse world and we need to expose students to all cultures, races, ethnicities; and literature is the perfect outlet for storytelling.
Storytelling has been shared throughout many diverse communities, cultures, and throughout time.
Literature is our way of connecting with others. In my project, I want to add books that feature Persons of Color, so that my students are able to see themselves represented in text, but also to learn of racial injustice from our past and present.
As an elementary teacher, sharing these stories and experiences, can hopefully impact students on their future endeavors and help them to see others as their friend and equal.
