My Students

Standing to Motivate and Focus

Some of my students need preferential seating according to their IEPs (individual educational plan).

I need to have choices for my students when it comes to seating.

Fyffe’s Students

I teach in a diverse, low income low poverty school district. I teach Ancient History and my students consist of beginner English learners, special education and regular education students. I have been teaching for 18 years and was never a big believer in medicating students for ADHD until three years ago when I had a student that couldn’t control his actions until he had his medication. I have several students that fidget and can’t sit still and needs to stand up during my lessons without being a distraction.

A lot of my students cope with demanding lives in and out of school, some of their home lives are much to be desired.

As a teacher, I challenge my students to Dream Big and despite their trials at home to strive to be better and use every opportunity that comes their way.

My Project

I need to have choices for my students with disabilities when it comes to seating in order for my students to be successful. The standing desk has been proven to help students with ADHD and fidgeting concerns. It calms the students and gives them the opportunity to move about without distracting my other students. I want all my students to have the same opportunity to learn in my class, my students being distracted is not an option. It also isn’t fair to the students that can’t control their action either. This desk gives them the freedom to continue to work and be productive at the same time. I have been seeking a way to differentiate the needs of all my students. This allows my students that fidget and can’t sit still to continue working by standing up, it also has a swinging footrest bar giving the student extra stimulation while they continue to listen or work. I want to give all my students the complete learning experience while in my room.
