My Students
My 6th grade students love activities that are interactive, engaging, and fun. They enjoy working on projects and activities that are hands-on and meaningful to them.
When I provide them with an engaging project that they create themselves, they blow it out of the park; they learn so much from the process because they have ownership.
I have been an educator for over 15 years. In my experience, students learn and grow from curriculum that is hands-on, engaging and fun.
Technology has improved so much since I was in school- so desks and work spaces need to improve too. Research shows that standing desks promote a myriad of health benefits; improved memory, cognitive skills, and overall brain health...allowing the brain to receive and digest new information.
Many of my students are ELL learners and really need to see visual examples, modeling, and explicit instruction. A standing desk will be helpful in allowing me to teach more effectively and switch between computer/ document camera/ and notes with smooth transitions.
My Project
When I am teaching my students using my laptop I find myself a bit disorganized because I'm trying to manage my computer, document camera, notes, textbook, and keep my students on task and engaged. Then to add the discomfort of constant bending over to flip to a different window on my computer screen or to write something down on my notes...I have a constant back ache.
I would love for my classroom to be equipped with a standing desk/ workspace for me to teach from.
Typical lessons are approximately 65 minutes long and utilize many different materials. The standing workspace would help me to organize myself and provide an easier and more comfortable way to teach. As an elementary classroom educator I need to be in two places at once- in front of the classroom modeling the lesson and instructions as well as moving around the classroom assisting the students with their tasks. Rather than getting up and down and up and down- I can simple walk away. My current cart I use is only big enough for my document camera so I have a small desk on the side for my computer and paper...and usually set the text book on the floor open to the page I need...and i can't see it very well.
The benefit of a standing workspace will directly provide me with increased productivity and mental focus, as well as engagement for the students.
