My Students
Our school resides on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and attracts students who are both economically and ethnically diverse.
Although we are a large middle school, students form a strong sense of community within their classes.
This is especially true in my co-taught math classes, which are made up of general education and special education students. Students are encouraged to become more self-aware of how they learns best and how to advocate for their needs.
My students may need encouragement to take on challenging math concepts and to dissolve math phobias but my hope is that they feel comfortable to take risks and learn from their mistakes.
My Project
Standing desk are becoming more and more popular in many offices due to health benefits and increased work productivity. So why are students still sitting all day in school? Luckily most middle school periods are only about 50 minutes long. However, most of my math classes are a double period.
Sitting through a double period of math is challenging for the average student and it is even more challenging for my students with ADD and ADHD who need to fidget and move.
Having standing desks for students to naturally shift their bodies and change positions would increase their focus and productivity. Providing students the choice to stand will give them the opportunity to become more self-aware of their learning needs and advocate for themselves.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
