My Students

Our school is located in the inner city on the Southwestern side of Richmond. Serving students in grades 6 – 8, the student/teacher ratio is roughly 15 to 1. There are over 700 students at the school, with a large portion of students who come from bilingual households. Each year, a small portion of students start the school year unable to speak or understand the English language.

My students are mostly from low to moderately low-income homes, making 98% of them eligible for free lunch.

Our students are also compassionate, caring, and respectful learners. They love music and love having opportunities to play and perform for their families and community. Our students come to school and class ready to give their all to their learning in spite of the challenges which they may face, i.e., lack of proper equipment. We want our students to experience goodness in education. We want them to know they are worth the investments of today in hopes of a brighter future tomorrow.

My Project

Students in the music class are now learning to play keyboard. We have a few keyboards for students to learn on but we do not have stands for the pianos. The keyboard stands will allow the keyboards to sit at the correct height for each student.

Having bad form at the keyboard makes playing more difficult.

It will put strain on your body and make playing more tiring. Improper hand techniques can make your fingers stiff and interfere with your dexterity. Shoulders protrude upward while playing with keyboards resting on tables that are not at the right height. This posture can cause certain muscles to become lengthened and weak and others to become shortened and tight. We want better our Scholars to learn in excellence.
