My students need colored paper that will help them stay organized as well as fidget toys and standing desks in order to help them stay focused and learn in a way that feels comfortable for them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
While the majority of students face difficult circumstances at home, most of them hover around the poverty line. They come in everyday ready and willing to meet new challenges.
My students are an energetic and passionate group of 9th graders.
My scholars are only the second cohort of students to participate in a new program for freshmen aimed at closing the achievement gap and raising the amount of students who successfully graduate. We work to equip students with the academic skills, habits, and character traits to succeed in high school and in a college or career of their choice. Many of my students receive special education services. I strive every day to provide each student with the appropriate resources ans strategies in order to help them find success!
My Project
Every day my students spend up to seven hours sitting in chairs as they learn how to think like historians, biologists, literary critics and mathematicians.
During this time, some of my special education students struggle to stay engaged in the material because they need more space and time to move.
Many students try their best to stay focused, but need extra supports to fully engage in class activities such as close reading and extended independent practice. If given items like fidget toys and standing desks, all of my students will have more opportunity to channel their energy effectively and access the material that will help them succeed in 9th grade.
Ultimately, I hope this project will help my students see that their differences are something that should be celebrated, and that sitting still is not a prerequisite for learning.
