My Students

My class is full of brilliant 6 year-olds ready to take on the world. They come in with little knowledge, and will come out reading in 2 languages. My first graders are in a Dual Language Spanish/English program.

Approximately 50% of my students come from native Spanish speaking homes, while the other 50% are from native English speaking homes.

Every day, 90% of the instruction is in Spanish. As we strive to learn the target language, we also introduce English into our day. We follow all the standards for the Common Core State Standards, but they learn primarily in Spanish in first grade. About half of my class receives free or reduced-price lunch and could use the extra help in all areas.

My Project

We use a pocket chart stand many times throughout the school day. We use it to hold learning centers like letter and word sorts, sentence frames for oral language practice and math centers like ordering numbers, sorting number place value cards and their corresponding number and counting money. My previous stand broke and is irreparable.

A study pocket chart stand may seem simple, but can be the backbone to hands-on learning.

We need this stand in order that students have a place to learn in different ways. By allowing them to work and explore in groups using this pocket chart stand, students will learn academics as well as social interaction with others - just by having a sturdy pocket chart stand.
