This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It's just no fun sitting in a desk all day, is it? Especially when you are an active 9 year old! My students need a chance to move during the day, not just sit at an old-fashioned desk and uncomfortable chair.
My students come from various parts of the world and are learning Academic English, math, and science with great enthusiasm.
They are loquacious, inquisitive, and active! This community loves our small, urban public elementary school and has relied on it for many, many years. Students come from other parts of the city to attend a bilingual school that has a vision of graduating students who are resilient, and culturally aware life-long learners.
My Project
An AlphaBetter desk is a tall desk where students can choose to stand or sit on a stool. Sitting for an extended period of time is challenging for most people, especially nine-year olds who need some freedom to move around and expend excess energy. Standing helps improve circulation and increase focus. With these two AlphaBetter standing desks and stools, students would have the option to stand during lessons or while working on more time-consuming projects.
Sitting still at a desk all day long is not conducive to productive learning, yet students are often expected to excel under such restrictive circumstances. I believe that students need to have the option to stand and move around so they can better focus. An AlphaBetter desk and stool in the classroom would provide my students with more opportunities to learn in a comfortable environment.
I do my best to give my students multiple opportunities to move between the rug and their desks throughout the day, but they sometimes need to work on longer projects, such as science or problem-solving in math, for extended periods of time.
The AlphaBetter desk and stool would give them opportunities to move around, increase circulation, feel comfortable, and work to the best of their abilities.
