My Project
Most of us remember math class as not enjoyable. It was a sit and get class or place where we felt like the dumb kid in the room not able to answer when called on by the teacher. Most of us did not get it. Help me change that math class experience for my students. Research done by Peter Liljedahl shows that standing up while doing math helps students get it. Having students stand up in random groups, along with other practices, while performing math tasks helps...
"Increases students willingness to collaborate, helps eliminate social barriers, increases knowledge mobility (information transfer), increases enthusiasm for math learning and reduces stress for the learner".
The white boards, markers, coordinate plane boards and spirals I am asking for will be mounted on the walls for students and will be used by students to change that math class experience. The students will work in random groups, this helps to break down social barriers. When in random groups students talk and share strategies to help them solve math tasks. We have seen that students are more likely to try things a peer does than what the teacher tells them to do. While writing on a white board reduces stress because students know they can erase whatever it is they write, nothing is permanent unless they want it to be. Writing on white boards and daily random groups are only two strategies we will use this school year to turn math class from a place of not getting it, to a safe place to try math and get it. Help my students with this first step towards building a thinking math classroom by providing them with white boards, markers and spirals.
