This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hesitant to speak up in class. Only a few of them regularly raise their hand to speak out, as many fear being wrong or looking stupid. Using white boards affords each of them the opportunity to participate in a way that feels safer, and engage more completely in the learning task.
I teach a very enthusiastic and spirited group of Sophomores.
Our school is a community charter school that offers an alternative to students who don't want to be bussed out. Their community has been historically under served, and most of the students demonstrate skills below grade-level. However, they are eager to learn and willing to throw themselves into complex projects if they can connect to the learning
My Project
In my classroom we've been working on developing students active voices, and encouraging as much participation as possible. Several students don't like speaking out in the room, so I am challenged to find innovative ways to get them to participate. Therefore I am requesting funding to purchase individual white board, markers, supply boxes and erasers. The individual white boards will be used in various ways to inspire engagement. For example, we will use them to review key components of lessons at the end of each day; I will ask questions and rather than ask for hands I will have each student record and show their response. I will also require students to use their boards for partner activities to help foster dialog related to the learning between students.
As many of my students demonstrate below basic skill levels I need to get a quick idea of how well they are understanding curriculum, and encourage them to speak up.
The requested materials will help me achieve both of these goals on a daily basis.
