Everyone can learn to read music. I would argue that it's even easier than reading books. The hard part is trying to read music if you don't have a music stand.
My students attend an open admissions urban charter school.
There is a special emphasis placed on the arts, especially music, in our school. My students all get music for 45 minutes every day. This is the first year the school is open, so every student comes with different musical experiences. It makes for a very unique group of kids, all of whom are excited to learn music.
My Project
Our music program has grown quickly to include keyboards, guitars, drums, hand chimes, and soon violins. With all instruments I have students reading music. If they leave my classes having learned and practiced reading music, they will be prepared to pursue other instruments as they move into middle and high school. Reading music allows them to continue learning new music independently. Secondarily, reading music has shown to improve students' abilities in reading and comprehending books. In reading music students are interpreting symbols, finding patterns, and using context clues, all important skills for reading books.
The music stands I am requesting are sturdy and will last for countless years. I have included some portable folding stands, as well, so we can easily take our music wherever we need to go!
Music stands will make it possible to have the string orchestra we envision.
Our 5th grade guitars players will be able to easily read the chords to their favorite songs. A music stand is the desk of a music class. It is where much of the work happens. It may seem like a small thing, but it makes music making a little easier.
