This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Stand up for music!! Okay, well stands hold up music. And that's what my classroom needs. I teach 4th, 5th and 6th grade orchestra at an elementary school that has many high-need students. I'm a traveling music teacher, and I don't always get a room to teach in. This year I have been put in the cafeteria to teach!
Not only is space limited at my school, but so are our resources. For the past 3 years, and even before then, we have been using wire folding music stands for class. These stands worked well at the beginning, but as they aged they lost their usefulness. After being taken care of by 4th grade students, the thin wire stands did not 'stand' much of a chance of surviving long. The stands we are using now are causing more of a distraction every day. In almost every class a stand gets knocked over, or music falls off the stand, causing a disruption and taking time away from learning.
New metal, Manhasset stands will certainly be more durable, sturdy, and hold the music the students are playing. They will even work well for our outdoor performances, as they won't get blown away in the wind. Having two small carts to store the stands on means they won't get tossed around and if our class gets moved to a different location they are easy to move on wheels.
Your donation to this project means that my orchestra students and my co-teacher's band students will have the materials they need to have a class free of distractions. You will give our students the sense that people in our community and around the world understand the importance of learning a musical instrument. You will teach them what it means to give and to support others. Because:
