My Students

As our school begins its second year, I am continuing to build a library of high quality instruments for our growing music program.

Our school is a growing Title I charter school in its second year of existence.

We currently serve Kindergarten through third grade. As the music teacher, I see every student three times a week. My students have so much musical energy. All it takes is a few beats of a funky rhythm to get everyone to start dancing.

My Project

Moving into year two, my priority is to continue building the music program with high quality instruments that will last for many years to come. The drums I want for this project are two large hand drums. They are the perfect height for young musicians to play standing up. Standing makes the drums easier to play and makes for a quicker rotation when we are taking turns around the circle. Plus, if everyone is standing, they are more free to move to the rhythms we are playing together! Another great benefit is that the heads of these drums can be replaced. After a few years of wear, a fresh drum head can give the instrument a whole new life. In addition to being perfectly suited for elementary musicians, these drums are of a quality that ensures they will have a long life in the classroom.

I love finding common objects to transform into instruments (like our paint can drums from year one), and the way my students and I must be creative in finding ways to make music with them.

But I believe it is equally important to deliver the message, that what we do in music class is important enough to invest in the best instruments available.
