This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has students from Pre-K through sixth grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many students in my class have accommodations to help meet their diverse learning needs.

I would love to accommodate the diverse needs of my students and to provide them with a flexible learning environment where they can move around the room, stand up to learn when needed, and refocus their attention.

Our classrooms mostly follow an inclusion model, which means we have general education students, special education, and students with multiple learning needs in the same seating environment. I want to provide a warm and engaging classroom environment where students can move freely and go to the "station" that fits their need at the moment. That might be a carpet on the floor, stand up desks in a learning center, a cozy reading nook to study, or a comfy writing center to finish an assignment.

My students are hard working 10 year olds that deserve the opportunity to learn. They are more productive when given the opportunity to move around while working.

My Project

Over the years, I have seen students being creative and create flexible seating options for themselves. They move back their chairs and kneel at their desks, get clipboards and sit on the rug, and the teacher's nightmare - Rock their Chairs back and forth!

Just like adults, children have the right to learn in diverse ways: sitting, standing, or moving about; and sit or stand desks are an ideal tool to meet those needs.

Instead of constantly asking my students to sit appropriately, or safely in class, I'd like to provide them with a safe and healthy alternative. I'm requesting for sit or stand desks so my students can choose to stand and work when they need to. The sit and stand desk I'm requesting will reduce the sedentary time of students in the classroom, and encourage them to take responsibility for their learning. Student health and wellness is a major concern in our public schools. As an educator, my primary concern is to provide students with the physical environment that is best suited for them to learn. Ten and eleven year olds should not be expected to sit at a desk for hours on end, especially when most of them go home to an equally sedentary lifestyle.

Research shows that children learn in different ways. Some students have learning challenges or attention deficiencies, and providing them with the opportunity to stand and work, could help them refocus their attention. I'd like to validate the students' needs to move about and choose their learning style.

We all have different needs and learning styles. Let's support our students and build a strong foundation for their learning.
