My students need graphic novels or manga. They love these books. They devour them. Reading is reading and the more they read the more they will know.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school community is in a high poverty area and is comprised of approximately 750 middle school students that come from many different backgrounds. Our students speak and or read in many languages. Some have survived horrific political unrest or family tragedies.
I believe reading is the key to a peaceful and contented life.
Students need to find activities that are calming and reading is the answer. Finding relaxing activities in such a complex world is essential to a life well lived.
Reading is key to a good education I want my students to find the serenity and self reflection that can come from reading. All students are exposed to their phones and texting, games and social media and they need to make a conscious effort to turn it off periodically and seek out a more collected and quiet environment for themselves. The more they learn to control the impulsive behavior that comes with texting the more they can learn to enjoy life.
My Project
These books will be shared by all students in my school in the library.
My students sit, stand and kneel when reading the graphic novel or manga books.
They are motivated to read these books with a zeal or passion that brings a smile to the library staff.
Reading is reading and getting them into the library is key to getting them interested in books. Creating a welcoming environment and supporting their reading needs is key to making them life-long readers. We are able to do this with graphic novels, but we need more. I support their reading choices. These books get them into the library and then they are exposed to a variety of other things that may pique their interests in other areas.
