My Students
Do you remember reading on your own in kindergarten? Today's kindergarten students are expected to be reading by the end of the school year. This is a challenge for my students, but they love learning their "popcorn words", commonly known as sight words, to become good readers.
My students are five and six year olds who love learning with hands on activities.
Our school is located in a small rural town with high poverty. My class has several students that are English Language Learners. The writing center is one of their favorites to visit. They love be able to "stamp" their names with the old wooden "ABC" stamps.
My Project
I would like to build on my students' love of the writing center by allowing them to create "skinny books". They have learned several basic "popcorn words" and are ready to build sentences to create their own stories. The sight word stamps would allow them to stamp their stories into the "skinny book". Each student would then be able to read a story that they have written to the class and their family. They would be the author and be able to read their own book!
Learning beginning, middle and ending sounds of words is a key to learning to read. The Phonics Stamps would allow the student to practice these skills by giving them a picture to go with the word they would be creating. I will be able to differentiate my instruction with these stamps based on the students needed skill--beginning sounds, middle sounds, or ending sounds.
Kindergarten is where is all begins.
Giving to this project will ensure that my students will become confident readers by allowing them to be the author and READER of their own stories. This confidence will follow them throughout their future education.
