My Project

As an autistic support special education teacher in a Philadelphia public school, I have the privilege of working with some truly remarkable teenagers. My curriculum is designed to be functional, emphasizing academics, communication, community engagement, and essential domestic and vocational skills. Ultimately, my role is to equip these students for success beyond high school. We achieve this through a variety of engaging methods, such as cooking, baking, community-based instruction, collaborative activities with other classes, and hands-on learning experiences. Despite facing economic hardships and academic challenges, my students demonstrate incredible resilience and dedication, showing up each day ready to put in their best effort in our classroom.

My students want to expand our weekly cafe by adding in more work stations in order to learn new vocational skills.

Each week my students take orders, complete inventory shopping, and prepare food and drinks to deliver to members of our school community on Fridays. Each year we have been able to expand a little by adding in new food and drink choices that we could make in our limited space. My students have big dreams to expand even more in the upcoming school years. In order to be able to do this we need functional counter top space to be able to prepare the food at. That is where your donations come in! We are requesting three stainless steel tables that we can move throughout our cooking space in order to create functional work stations and more gloves. These tables will not only allow us to expand our cafe choices, they will allow us to create more opportunities for students to be involved in the process of food preparations for the cafe.
