My Students

At the beginning of every year, my theatre students inevitably ask when we will be learning about how to apply stage make-up. It's traditionally an exciting part of the curriculum. In recent years we've run out of budget to purchase the supplies for this unit. I'm hoping this year will be different!

Our high school is located in a small town with a diverse population.

Most students come from middle to lower income families without much extra income for extracurricular activities and supplies. The high school has become the epicenter and supplier of all community activities and events, as such, the students spend most of their time at the school participating in whatever programs can be supported with the small budget we do have.

My Project

The students in the theatre classes will use these make-up supplies in a few different settings. The first will be to learn stage make-up in our theatre classes. Stage make-up is part of the national theatre curriculum and the students will have the opportunity to participate in this unit with these supplies. They'll learn how to do general stage make-up, old age make-up, and trauma make-up. The second thing is the students will be able to use these supplies to apply make-up for our school plays each year. Lastly, the students will be able to use these supplies at various fundraising events this school year to help them save money for our annual trip to the California Educational Theatre association festival as they will be able to apply make-up and do face paining at community events

Each year the students get most excited about learning to apply make-up, make scars, cuts, and bruises, and learning how to make their fiends look like "old people" onstage.

Such a hands on unit is exciting--especially with it being something they wouldn't normally get to learn or do anywhere else. The opportunity to have these basic stage make-up supplies will give the students an exciting learning opportunity while also giving them valuable skills they can take into their community.
