Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work alongside students grades 9-12 in my Stage Design class, where we collaborate with our musical theater department to create set pieces, props, costumes, etc. to help bring the mainstage productions to life. Stage Design in a hands-on visual arts class that integrates a myriad of techniques and materials, focusing heavily on mixed-media manipulation and active problem solving. The 25-26 school year will be the third year I will teach this class. After two years of determining what works, doesn't work, or needs altering, I have come to the conclusion that many of our set backs come from not being able to get the tools we need to complete the projects. I have written a grant for each school year I have taught Stage Design so far, but most of this money goes towards materials/consumables such as wood, paint, fabric, etc. To build in my classroom, we currently have 1 drill I have my students switch between, making it very difficult to complete projects on time.
This project would directly fund the tools required for my students to be involved in the design and construction of set pieces and props that are used on stage during the musical performances.
My students love seeing their work used in public performances. Adding 2 more drills may not seem like a lot, but it would make all the difference to my high schoolers. Instead of one drill shared between 3 students, it could be three drills shared between 9 students. With classes of 25+ students, this makes a huge difference in active participation. This project would also fund a shop vac--something that we are in desperate need of in order to be able to clean the classroom adequately.
