My Students
"When students sit on stability balls, both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their bodies centered on the balls. And when the brain is stimulated, it's more focused on learning." ~James Roland
The students are an enthusiastic group of fourth graders who attend an urban public school in Ohio.
Keeping them engaged and maximizing learning is challenging when taking into account the different needs of each and every student. One need that every student has is more physical activity in and outside the classroom. Currently, students are only given a 20 minute recess and one period of P.E. a week. Although I cannot control their schedule, I can impact how much activity they have in the classroom.
My Project
Numerous studies have found that the use of stability balls in the classroom as student chairs has improved students' learning. By sitting on a stability ball, not only do students use their core muscles to stay centered on the ball, keeping balance also stimulates both sides of the brain. When both sides of the brain are being stimulated, students are more focused on processing new information and learning. The balls also help students to focus all that excess energy in a positive way. Excess energy is certainly an issue when taking into account the limited time they spend outside at recess.
A good portion of my students have special needs and ADHD.
Having these stability balls in the classroom will help my students with and without special needs to focus and be more receptive in the lessons and engaging in learning. Studies have found that sitting on stability balls help these young minds to concentrate on exams, class discussions and other areas of learning.
