This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
CHEVRON CLASS CHALLENGE! Have you ever tried to learn a science concept listening to a teacher talk about it? Or did you only get to watch a demonstration instead of hands on participation. My students prefer to learn science by doing science.
My students have become accustom to learning about science by conducting scientific investigations.
However, they are faced with the challenge of not having enough lab materials. My students come from a high needs community and resources are limited. Often times, they must watch me demonstrate a concept, take notes and are then expected to comprehend the material. However when my students are able to manipulate and explore concepts through hands on laboratory investigations they are able to ask meaningful questions, find the answers and later successfully apply what they have learned to assessments.
My Project
To promote a greater understanding of density and buoyancy I need to give the students an opportunity to experiment with different materials using appropriate equipment. These materials will be used to first investigate the property of matter. Students will compare densities of various materials using the density set I am requesting. Students will then learn how to calculate the density of common materials using the electronic scale and graduated cylinders that I am requesting. Students will then explore Archimedes principal. Again, they will compare the densities of different materials and their buoyancy. The project is concluded with a project where the students construct a boat, from the knowledge they have about density of material, so that it will float for 60 seconds when additional weight is added to the boat.
Hands on activities and learning through inquiry promotes my students problem solving skills.
My students have a broader understanding of science concepts because they make observations, ask questions and investigate what they don't already know. More important, they are able to take these skills with them to other classes and outside of school. Your donation helps my students become better learners now and successful learners in the future. Thank you for supporting my students success!
