My Project
Adding bean bag chairs to my self-contained special education classroom will make a meaningful difference for my students, many of whom are on the Autism spectrum. These students often have unique sensory processing needs, and traditional classroom furniture can be overstimulating or uncomfortable. Bean bag chairs provide a soft, enveloping seating option that helps reduce sensory overload and promotes a calming effect. The ability to sink into a chair that molds to their body can be incredibly soothing for students with Autism, helping them feel secure and grounded—an essential foundation for focused learning.
Beyond sensory benefits, bean bag chairs will also support the need for flexible, student-centered learning spaces.
My students thrive when given choices and a sense of control in their environment. Having the option to sit in a bean bag chair during independent work, reading time, or when they need a break helps them self-regulate and reduces anxiety. For many of my students, emotional regulation and comfort are directly tied to their ability to engage academically. By providing this simple yet effective alternative seating, I am creating a space that respects their needs and fosters success in both learning and emotional growth.
