Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When students want to make their community a better place, I try to do everything I can support them!
Our students have created a gardening club to rehabilitate the neglected patches of dirt on our campus.
Boys and girls gather on Saturday mornings and after school to chip away at dirt that has been hardened by years of sun and footsteps. They want to make sure our handicap accessible ramps are surrounded by flowers and nutritious vegetables to share with the many, many homeless people in our community (including some students' families). These students are motivated to make our campus a beautiful place to learn and grow.
My Project
A single, quiet student popped up his head and said, "we need to fix the dirt" and now we have a large club of students slowly reviving planters that had nearly become obsolete. Now, they use small buckets to get water from drinking fountains and carry it to hydrate the dirt. They're getting blisters from the shovels and everyone is a little sun burnt. To keep our students going, we'd love some hoses, gloves, and sunscreen to keep the plants (and our kids) healthy.
This project will not only feed families and beautify our campus, it also helps our students become better community members and citizens.
Instead of being discouraged by the neglect on our campus, our students are imagining ways to transform the world around them. Please help them help each other today!
