Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the proud teacher of a 12:1 self-contained class. My students come with learning, language, and behavioral challenges.

In order for my students to be successful, it is my responsibility to make the necessary classroom accommodations to serve their needs and learning styles.

I teach in the one of the highest poverty areas in our nation. Despite their economic hardships, my students come to school eager and ready to learn. Keeping a child’s attention on their school work can be difficult for any parent or teacher. Doing so when that child has ADHD or some other learning disability can be even more challenging.

When I student becomes disruptive, I can say, "Give me 5 minutes," meaning, "Go jump on the trampoline." This holds their self esteem and confidence intact so much more than being sent out of the classroom. Additionally, I plan on motivating my high energy kids by letting them shoot some hoops for a few minutes after completing certain tasks.

My Project

What strikes me about my students is their willingness and eagerness to learn. My students struggle and need to work twice or triple as hard as an average student. Some have ADHD and difficulty focusing, sensory disorders, autism, receptive and expressive language disabilities, etc. However, they are continually trying. When it "clicks" as it always does, my students are full of joy. My students do not need stickers or prizes. They are intrinsically eager to learn.

Staying still is overrated.

Flexible seating is a wonderful thing — especially in the special ed classroom. It allows students to move around the classroom to do their work and communicate in a comfortable setting. That old mantra, "Sit still" does not work in my class. It makes for some unhappy kids. I need classroom furniture conducive to kinesthetic learning. Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student.
