My Students
My students are some of the most inquisitive and driven in NYC, which is evident by their full schedules and packed after school activities. These are some of the best and brightest students and yet few understand the impacts we are having on our environment!
The students of my school strive to learn all they can and dream of careers in medicine and engineering.
They take multiple AP classes and participate in multiple after school clubs and teams. And over the past few years, I have seen a shift in the student body - a greater awareness of and wish to discuss the ecological footprint of our school community. It is because of this student lead discussion that I am asking for your help.
The students have been working to create a greater understanding within and participation throughout our school community in our recycling program. Over the past 2 years we placed recycling stations for paper, plastic and trash at 2 locations on each of the 10 floor of our building.
My Project
From these stations a dedicated team of students collect, separate, and weigh what is found on each floor. What we found was twofold: 1. Students will recycle if the bins are there and 2. They recycle better when the stations are clearly and colorfully labeled.
The program has been such a success that the principal has agreed to buy multiple new recycling cans for every classroom in the building, but we need to get the materials to label them. That is why I am asking for your help. We need foam board and pens, scissors, mounting tape and paint markers to make the signs that help our school on its path to becoming more green - and at the same time allow my students to see the impact their observations and analysis of data can have in a real world setting.
As the global world becomes smaller, we are becoming more aware of the impacts we are having on the planet.
