My Project

In February, author and graphic novelist Christina Soontornvat will be visiting our school for an author talk with our entire class of 7th graders, approximately 180 students total, and I'd love to be able to give our free copies of her book during the event to help bridge the gap between the excitement of the author's visit and the students' trip home.

Author talks are magical events where kids get to meet the creator of the stories they consume, and students see the potential for transferring their passions and skills in what are often viewed as education-only endeavors, like writing, onward into future careers.

Many times, it has never before occurred to a student that writing or illustrating is an option for their future... until they meet an author in person and get to ask questions and see that they are real people too who were once young, in school, and confined to writing and drawing parameters set by others.

Additionally, the impact of having books in the home that students own is immeasurable-- they own the reading, the learning, and the journey of the characters when the book is theirs to keep, and it acts as a reminder of the lessons they learned during the author talk!

Graphic novels, like the one we're buying for this project, also help support our language learning and literacy journey for our English Language Learners, of which we have many at our school in particular. They get to experience a community event and have the added support of illustration to encourage them to be involved and know the story at the center of the excitement!
