This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

With this project, I aim to incorporate more ways for students to grapple with reading, understanding, and solving complex math word problems. The goal of the word problem challenge is to promote group work and encourage using physical tools and manipulatives to solve for missing values (variables) in problems.

Students typically struggle with solving and writing word problems and I hope to continue to find ways to incorporate more fun themed activities in my classroom, starting with a Valentine's Day theme to get students excited to learn.

Students will work in teams and solve Valentine's Day related word problems around the classroom using various manipulatives such as candy and beads to represent variables that they must solve for and define. Students will also practice writing their own word problems for other groups to solve about one of the following, chosen at random, a funny shaped fidget toy, a Rubik's Cube, or Isabella from Encanto. Those are all topics that have come up randomly in class in the past few weeks and are sure to spark some creativity in word problem writing.

All students who complete the activity will be rewarded for their participation with a goodie bag containing the manipulatives used during the activity - candy, fruit snacks, beads for bracelets, and fidget toys. This activity has proven to be successful in my classroom previously, for Halloween, and I'm excited to use the upcoming holiday as another way to keep the fun, learning, and student collaboration happening in our space!
