I am requesting new books about empathy and other social-emotional themes to introduce the topic of compassion into our classroom. At this very young age, getting to know ourselves and our relationships to other people based on our similarities and differences is a great place to start!
This includes reading books about emotional readiness and inclusivity, and diversity as well as many hands-on activities where the students can explore the idea of similarities and differences on their own.
Our students will learn compassion towards their classmates and community members through understanding their own feelings, the different needs of their peers with autism and different cultures.
I am hoping with this newfound appreciation for other people, they will treat their classmates, their school peers, and community members with more compassion and love. I will measure their success with the classroom climate improving and becoming more based in positivity. Reading is the best way to introduce or reinforce compassion.
Books like “All Are Welcome”, “Different is Good”, “Why Me Mama?”, “Fill A Bucket”, “Not Like The Others”, “This Is How We Do It”, and more closely related books about diversity and inclusion for children will be read during story time on the rug daily and discussed as a whole group. We will have a follow up question of the day with each book to help our students connect their experiences with the book to cultivate empathy for others. Tactile and active play items like the play dough mat and different emotional face stamps will be used in small group activities to create a more hands on experience and discussion. This will help our students connect what they are seeing and hearing from the books about inclusion and diversity to what they are doing with their hands and with their classmates.
