My Students

I am a third grade special education teacher within a full inclusion classroom setting! My students have varied needs, with disabilities ranging from autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities, and high incidence intellectual disabilities. I currently have a caseload of seven identified students, who participate with an additional thirteen general education students within my classroom.

We have fostered a loving, inclusive, and equitable classroom community, and I am fortunate to teach at a school that values the importance of inclusive practices!

Hawaii is rich in diverse languages, cultures, and identities, but this has not been representative in our classroom resources. Teaching at one of the largest public education elementary schools in the state of Hawaii, we have a very diverse population of needs. We have over 50 spoken languages, over 80% of our students qualify for free and reduced price lunches, and our special education population represents 13% of our school community. Many of our students do not have an equal access to resources at home and resources provided by our school are essential for their educational advancement. We love learning and are eager to explore, and I am thankful that school truly is a safe space for my students!

My Project

Many of our students are emergent and struggling readers due to their lack of exposure to high interest texts. Our school and classroom libraries are vastly underfunded and provide limited resources for student engagement. Students need texts that meet them at their ability level, that are representative of their identities, and that pique their interests.

By donating to our project, you will be providing opportunities for our students to become self-directed leaders of literacy!

Students will become more accountable for their learning when they are given resources that are meaningful and relevant to them.
